VX-Mode Screenshots

This is intended as a quick and brief description of how VX-Mode works. As we all know, a picture is worth a thousand words...

First, since I'm using Linux, I can't run Dragon NaturallySpeaking directly. I'm using VMware for Linux with a virtual Windows XP machine to run it. Fortunately, this isn't difficult at all.

There is only one window in the virtual Windows machine -- the VX Mode window. This is the window that I'm going to dictate "into".

Now, on my Linux desktop, I will open an XEmacs window and open a new file within it:

Let's try running VX Mode now:

You can see that VX Mode is running by the little "VX:on" indicator in the modeline. "On" indicates that the microphone is on and VX Mode is ready for voice input

Let's try dictating. I have just said "this is a demonstration". You can see how the text gets inserted into the buffer. The blue color indicates what Dragon thinks has recently been dictated. This is what commands such as "scratch that" will refer to.

You can see how the most recently dictated phrase gets colored in blue.

I will now go manually (using the keyboard, that is) into the text and type "natural dictation and". You can see how the manually inserted text gets colored red.

I will now dictate some more and then select some words and click the right mouse button on them. You can see how the corrections menu appears. You can pick anything from the corrections menu and the text will be replaced. You can also see that the text that I had inserted manually before has become black, just like the rest of the buffer. That means that it has been synchronized with Dragon.

I hope this brief demonstration gives you an idea of what the software can do for you.
